Home and School Scaffolding is an approach that utilises trusted relationships that are already established between children and their families, and children and their teachers, to deliver therapeutic information, strategies and support to a child, within their family and school systems. In this project there is an assumption that there is already a relationship between the child and teacher and the child and family. Home and School Scaffolding works to support the child within these relationships but also to build or strengthen the relationship between the school and home to provide a collaborative wraparound of strategies.
This Home and School Scaffolding resource kit features three story books (available in English and Te reo) that introduce anxiety management strategies which are looked at in more depth and complexity in the activities for home and school within the books. We suggest the school part of the resource should be completed first, introducing the children to the concepts of identifying their own anxiety, how this effects their behaviour and learning and the behaviour and learning of their peers. The children will have a book to take home and share with activities and discussion points for the family to complete together to build on the child's school based learning. The resources will are based on the recommendations from Resilience Framework and Guidelines for Practice Report for the New Zealand Ministry of Social Development, namely;
